[INFO] 091231 TVXQ Members Show Kindness

Back in July we reported that leader Yunho of TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki gave back by donating his time and volunteering at an orphanage in Nam-gu, Gwangju City. He served food and also cleaned the building.

Earlier in the month we reported that Xiah Junsu along with his fan club donated money to a poor village in Cambodia. The village was so thankful for the donation that they even named the village after him.

On December 31st, these two acts of kindness were shown on display on the documentary show Star The Secret.

Yunho gets about 3 days of vacation in a whole year and he mainly spends the few days off doing volunteer work at an orphanage. Yunho first debuted with TVXQ when he was 17 and even before that he a back-up dancer for Dana (CSJH theGrace). Even with his busy schedule, he never missed a day of school. Also he sometimes had to dye his hair for performances, but on the days he had to go to school, he would always go to a hair salon and make it black again. The person in charge of the orphanage said that Yunho is a big help to the kids. In the video you can see him dancing and playing with them.

They interview many people that live in the Xiah Junsu Village and they express that they're all very thankful to him. They say that he was the one that helped them fix their houses. One of them stated, "My heart had pain because of the falling roofs and for the kids who would get hit by the rain when it leaked through the roof. Now that everything's fixed, I'm really happy."

[TRANS] 100101 "We want to keep doing our best", Tohoshinki shakes away break-up rumors, from Oricon news

The popular Korean group Tohoshinki, who is in the midst of having break-up rumors, performed on "60th NHK Kouhaku Utagassen" on the last day of the year, and later appeared on TBS' special program "CDTV SPECIAL! New Year's Eve Premium Live 2009→2010". When being asked by MC TAKAHIRO (EXILE) what their aspiration for this year is, Jaejoong stopped a moment and only said, "We want to keep doing our best like last year."

After the three members of Tohoshinki - Junsu, Jaejoong, and Yoochun - filed a lawsuit to request for a provisional disposition to terminate the exclusive contract with their managing company, there have been rumors of them breaking up floating around. There are also rumors that the members cannot communicate normally and that their actions are being observed. However, in fact, on the rehearsal day of Kouhaku, it has been reported that the three members and Yunho, Changmin returned to their waiting room in two separate groups.

After performing "Stand by U" at Kouhaku, they chose to not answer the press corps' questions. At CDTV, they only said, "Good evening everyone, we are Tohoshinki" and sang the song which contained a message in its lyrics.

[INFO] 091230 SM Entertainment Refutes Super Junior Lawsuit Claims + Hangeng Contract Termination Trial Begins Jan 8

SM Entertainment refutes Super Junior lawsuit claims

Super Junior
In reponse to widespread rumors circulating that 5 other Super Junior members besides Hankyung had also filed lawsuits against SM Entertainment for unfair contract terms, the latter has issued a strongly worded statement on 29th December to refute the claims.

In the aftermath of Hankyung filing a lawsuit against SM Entertainment, there were reports afterwards that 5 other Super Junior members, Leeteuk, Yesung, Kangin, Eunhyuk and Donghae had done likewise. It also stated that because of Hankyung's nationality, his case was made public first before the others.

But SM Entertainment has issued a strong rebuttal stating that the news report claiming that 5 Super Junior members had filed lawsuits against them for unfair contracts were fabricated and untrue. And if such fabricated reports are published again in future, SM Entertainment will seek legal action against the publisher and the reporter.

The statement was signed off by SM Entertainment's CEO Kim Young Min and the affected Super Junior members.

Hangeng Contract Termination Trial Begins Jan 8

Recently, SJ leader ((TN: They mean SJM, as usual)) Hangeng’s contract termination request with SM Entertainment has caused great turmoil after being disclosed by the media. As Hangeng’s representative lawyer Lee disclosed recently, Hangeng has already turned in a “Suspension of Contract Agreement” request and a “Contract Termination” request to court. The trials will begin January 8th in Korea. To stop SM Entertainment from using delaying tactics, Hangeng has especially requested a “Suspension of Contract Agreement”. If the agreement is approved by court, Hangeng will be freed no earlier than March of next year.

[TRANS] 091231 tvN ENEWS 'Blackbox', Celebrities' Annual Earnings Ranking Revealed

TVXQ, who is currently in a dispute with their agency, caught the attention of many by having the highest annual earnings this year dispite the unfavorable conditions they are currently in.

tvN ENEWS' 'blackbox' corner that was aired on the 20th ranked the celebrities with the top ten annual earnings this year.

The celebrity with the highest earnings was TVXQ, followed by Rain, Big Bang, Super Junior, Kim Hyun Joon, Go Hyun Jung, Girls' Generation, Lee Byung Hun, Yoo Jae Seok and Kang Ho Dong.

It was found that TVXQ earned at least 126.4 billion Won (equivalent to approximately 109 million USD) this year when their 90 billion Won earnings from Japanese album sales are taken into account.

However, this news is overshadowed by the fact that TVXQ is currently fighting a legal dispute with their agency SM Entertainment over an 'unfair contract' and have even been driven to the brink of a disbandment.

Newsway announcer/reporter Jung Soo Ryang stated, "TVXQ was able to reap such earning regardless of the fact that they are in such unfavorable conditions with the legal dispute," and "If their had been no legal dispute, they would have earned much more than this amount."

She also added, "If TVXQ, who has evolved from just a domestic star to a Hallyu star of Asia, cannot overcome these unfortunate conditions and disband, not only will this be a huge loss to our country's entertainment industry, it will also be a loss at a nationwide scale," and "I hope to see TVXQ come to a reasonable agreement with their agency and return to the stage in good spirits."

ENEWS' 'Blackbox' airs every Wednesday and brings experts of many fields to the panel to discuss controversial events of the entertainment industry.

[NEWS] 091231 TVXQ Performs at Kouhaku

Last year at this time, the boys of TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki were bestowed the honor of performing on NHK's prestigious Kohaku. For those that don't know what Kohaku is and how it's such a big deal, here's an excerpt from wikipedia which explains it pretty well:

"Kohaku Uta Gassen more commonly known as simply Kohaku, is an annual music show on the New Year's Eve produced by Japanese public broadcaster NHK and broadcast on both television and radio, nationally and internationally by NHK's networks and some overseas (mainly cable) broadcasters which bought the program... Literally "Red and White Song Battle," the program divides the most popular music artists of the year into competing teams of red and white. The "red" team or akagumi is composed of all female artists (or groups with female vocals), while the "white" team or shirogumi is all male (or groups with male vocals). The honor of performing on Kohaku is strictly by invitation, so only the most successful J-POP artists and enka singers can perform. Even today, a performance on Kohaku is said to be a big highlight in a singer's career because of the show's large reach."

Last month the boys were invited once again and earlier today they sang their hit single Stand By U. Despite what they're going through they put on an excellent performance.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year.

A lot of things happened last year.
Regarding the issue of EXILE merging and bringing up to a total of 14 members, they have received various opinions from many people,
and although I myself also received a lot of opinions and criticisms, I decided to face forward and take the lead of it.
There were a lot of things that happened in the entertainment industry in 2009,
and we ourselves worked with our principles based on what we believed to be right and correct.

Moreover, this time, regarding the problem of a certain artist,
we are doing our best what we can; however, there are a lot of different barriers that are beyond our control,
turning this into an extremely difficult problem.
The fans might know of the truth behind even more than we do.
However, we will never give up until the very end, and keep going forward with the spirit of "Zettee, Makenee" [Absolutely not losing].

Moreover, to welcome 2010, I think back of the many experiences I was able to acquire in 2009,
remind myself of the many encouraging messages from fans,
as well as the many strict messages I received.
In 2010, my goals are to correspond to fans even faster than I did in 2009,
and as much as I could, to perform quick administration on this site.
Please keep supporting avex in 2010 and 2011 too.
I hope that everyone, as well as our avex members and people whom we concern about... will be having a good year in 2010.

Matsuura Masato

[NEWS] 091230 FOCUS: 10 Awards - Top 10 News of 2009

Top 10 News of 2009

Two former presidents and a king passed away. One wrong remark during an entertainment show took the entire country by storm. Such unbelievably enormous incidents were played out in unbelievable directions during 2009. Thus, the top ten news of 2009 selected by <10> may seem like the ten most incredulous news of the year. But one could say that what these ten news stories have in common is that they carry the flow of Korea’s pop culture. Can you really believe that all these things happened within a span of one year?

News 1. Actress Jang Ja-yeon commits suicide
On March 7, one little known actress wrote in her suicide note, “I am a weak, powerless actress. I want to be free from this pain” and killed herself. It was actress Jang Ja-yeon, who was appearing in KBS TV series “Boys Over Flowers” at the time. The suicide note, which was 12 pages long on A4-sized paper, explained that she had been physically abused by her agency, forced to drink and provide sexual services. It also listed names of high-ranking executives in the industry, including a head of media company, television drama director and owners of business companies. People started calling the note “The Jang Ja-yeon List”. The incident brought to surface how badly aspiring actresses and female celebrities in general have been violated and the ugly power of the media. But due to slow, passive investigation by the Korean authorities, the truth never came to light. Of all people who were under investigation, only two people involved in the incident -- former head of Jang’s agency and former manager who exposed Jang’s suicide notes -- were indicted and the suspects whose names were listed in the documents were all cleared of charges and let go. Was the death of Jang Ja-yeon a suicide or a homicide?

News 2. Korean media laws revised
In March, the two political parties of Korea’s National Assembly agreed that they would put the issue of media law revision to vote in June. And the consequent, crazy uproar that took place at the National Assembly in July was almost half-expected. Amidst all the physical fighting between the two opposing party members, the material bribery and proxy votes, the Grand National Party officials passed the bill allowing for media law revision. With the new media law, businesses and daily newspaper publications can own up to 10 percent of the shares of a public network and companies can jump into the new media businesses. Of course, nobody knows for sure what kind of consequences such a decision will bring. What we do know, however, is that there is nothing reasonable about what had happened during the revision process; a large number of proxy votes got the new bill passed, a government official who had protested against the new bill led a labor strike among media employees, the ruling of Korea’s Constitutional Court which said the passing of the new bill stood viable even if it admitted people’s voting rights had been violated during the process.

News 3. Michael Jackson dies
2009 could be called “the year of loss” since we lost so many people who have influenced our lives. And the death of Michael Jackson was a big loss to everyone around the world. He was the one and only “King of Pop” who had conquered the world, but he died a lonely death amidst all the rumors. Now all we can do is show Michael Jackson’s performances to our children because we might never see such an entertainer ever again. The King may be dead but pop music lasts forever.

News 4. Jae-beom leaves idol group 2PM
One cannot say that Park Jae-beom was right in writing “I hate Korea” on his blog during his teen years. One may not approve of what he did and may even criticize him for it. But was it so wrong that he had to leave Korea amidst requests for suicide petitions? In just four days after the news of what he had written broke out, Jae-beom quit his group 2PM. Everything that had happened was a violent storm cooked up by a minimal number of extreme netizens and the media which was busy upping the number of visitors. There are people in this country who want to deport a boy over what he had written as a teenager. Really, how could they mess with someone’s life so carelessly?

News 5. Korean stars make Hollywood debut
A long time ago, Sonokong and his monks headed west in search of India for more advanced Buddhism. And in the age of globalization, Korean stars also headed west to Hollywood, which is the world capital of the entertainment business. 2009 was a year when the long journey to Hollywood produced some tangible achievements. Rain -- who was under pressure to become a global star after making TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” list in 2006 -- proved himself by playing the title role in action movie “Ninja Assassin”. And Lee Byung-hun, who seemed somewhat stuck in the Hallyu star label, also made himself known around the world by playing Storm Shadow, the most impressive villain in “G. I. Joe”. People criticized the Wonder Girls’ of neglecting the Korean music market when they made their U.S. debut, but they made quite an achievement -- they entered the Billboard Hot100 chart within a year of their debut.

News 6. G-Dragon accused of plagiarism
The plagiarism controversy surrounding G-Dragon’s solo album “Heartbreaker” was one of the hottest issues in the Korean music industry this year. Netizens kept debating whether or not the song was plagiarized and such discussion led to bigger issues in the music business as a whole, such as plagiarism controversies of other Korean musicians, the criteria of plagiarism and musical copyrights. However, it was unexpected that such controversy would produce the (tentatively titled) “Plagiarism Committee”, an official government organization under the authority of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. We might soon get to see ten or so officials making their plagiarism-related rulings over numerous Korean pop songs.

News 7. Kim Jae-dong, Son Seok-hee resign from TV shows
I had “doubts” when emcee Kim Jae-dong hosted the official funeral ceremonies for former Korean president Roh Moo-hyun. I also had “doubts” when I heard the rumor that Son Seok-hee would be resigning as host of MBC program “100 Minute Discussion”. But “doubt” turned into reality in Korea in 2009; whatever incident one had imagined could happen and even more came true this year. Kim and Son both stepped down from their posts as the main emcee of KBS “Star Golden Bell” and host of “100 Minute Discussion”, respectively. On the outside, the reason for their resignation was their “high salary”. In a government audit report released on October 11, politician Lee Jeong-hyun, a member of the Grand National Party, went as far as exposing the names of Korean celebrities -- including Yoo Jae-seok and Park Myung-soo -- who receive high salaries from broadcaster MBC. With Lee promoting the maximum-efficiency strategy [meaning that less pay is more efficient], his Party member Hong Joon-pyo made a seemingly sarcastic comment -- “Why don’t you give [MBC] a discount?” -- during a telephone interview with Son’s MBC radio show. In such times when one can get easily fired by expressing one’s beliefs or showing resistance against certain political parties, how will the broadcasting industry fare in the future? They even restrict people who appear on television -- what a dirty world this is!

News 8. TVXQ’s legal troubles with SM Entertainment
Fans were probably more worried than excited when TVXQ members Xiah Junsu, Hero Jaejoong and Micky Yoochun made an appearance at the recent Mnet music awards. In the beginning -- back when the members were granted partial nullification of their contract with agency SM Entertainment -- nobody had expected that legal troubles between the group’s three members and SM would go on for as long as it has. The reason that this case is so frustrating is not because both parties simply have different perspectives but because they are fighting from completely different standpoints. The three TVXQ members had a problem with the inequality of contract clauses while SM claims that the real problem laid in their participation in a cosmetics business. Thus, they are not debating their cases to make the other party understand but are endlessly fighting and exposing secrets to reveal the truth. Nobody knows when this battle will end but the ending that everyone -- including the fans, the members and SM -- probably wants is for TVXQ to remain as a group and resume their activities in Korea.

News 9. The “Loser” remark
It was midnight, November 19th, 2009 when the infamous “Loser” drama began. It was only a matter of time that such incident would occur and the public would vent their anger toward the remark -- “All men shorter than 180 centimeters are losers” -- made by one college student appearing on KBS entertainment show “Chitchat of Beautiful Ladies”. In other words, it was not a random incident that was birthed by a flippant remark from a female college student but a bomb that had been ready to explode. After all, Korean society was obsessed with external beauty, public broadcasting stations had long lost their function of self-purification and the Internet had become a place for verbal violence rather than healthy discussions. It was later revealed by the show’s writers that the “loser” expression had been written in the script but by then it was too late to undo the damages. This is why this uproar, which died down as quickly as it had flared up, should not be buried in our memories as something that was merely unpleasant. What have we learned from this variety show disaster which was created by the social ills of the 21st century?

News 10. Outbreak of H1N1 influenza virus
Korea is a country that is very quick in picking up new trends and Korea did just that when the latest trend called the new H1N1 influenza virus came around. Thanks to their overloaded work schedules and exposure to unspecified public, celebrities practically had to be classified into a special group extra-sensitive to the virus. Many Korean stars including Lee Seung-gi, Wheesung, Kim Joon and Shinji were diagnosed with the flu virus and had to take a break from work. In case of young idol groups who live together, many of the members got infected and laid sick in bed. Many pop idols -- including Kim Hyun-joong (SS501), Taemin, Onew and Jonghyun (SHINee), Sulli and Krystal (f(x)), Jo Kwon and Jinwoon (2AM), Lee Joon and Cheon Dung (MBLAQ) -- got sick and fortunately recovered from the virus. [Actors who played] Bidam and Alcheon from MBC TV series “Queen Seon-deok” got infected one after the other and even tough guy actor Choi Min-soo suffered from the disease. This virus is truly fair in its destructiveness -- attacking the male and females, and the young and old alike.

[TRANS] 091230 Tohoshinki Rehearsed Separately? The 5 Sing Together

「The 60th NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen Rehearsal」 (30th、NHK Hall)

Ever since Jejung (23), Junsu (22) and Yuchun (23) filed a lawsuit against their Korean management company over contract issues, rumours have been abound regarding this popular group from Korea, who attended the rehearsals for Kouhaku Uta Gessen on 30 December. Although all 5 of them stood on the stage together, they were split into 3 versus 2, and there was no conversation between them. There was a continuation of the previous day, where they gave off a tense atmosphere.

During the rehearsals for the opening and ending, which involved all the artists, they stood behind others. Junsu, Yuchun and Jejung were laughing and talking to other artists, while Yunho (23) and Changmin (21) were looking downwards. It was also seen that when they were returning to the waiting room, they divided into 3 and 2.

After the Kouhaku Uta Gassen rehearsals, they attended the Japan Records Award where 「Stand by U」was awarded with an Excellence Award. Even here, the mood between the 3 and 2 also seemed awkward. When asked to make a comment, Yunho said, "Looking over the year, I'm very happy that we were finally able to stand on our dream stage, the Tokyo Dome." However, although these 5 people can be proud of breaking through an impregnable fortress with their success, it felt like the relationship between them has changed.

The promotions for their new single「BREAK OUT」which will be released on 27 January 2010 and their 'Best Album', which will be released 17 February, have no been decided yet. The Kouhaku Uta Gassen on the 31st, followed by the TBS 「CDTV Special! New Year's Eve Premier Live」(11.40pm), might very well be their last performance together.

[TRANS] 091231 Tohoshinki at the Kouhaku Rehearsal

Kouhaku: Tohoshinki appeared as 5, they held rehearsals shutting out the media

The Korean dance and vocal group Tohoshinki appeared as 5 in December 30, for the rehearsal for the year end NHK "Kouhaku". It was a very tight security, all the media was shut out. We media were able to see the rehearsal from the monitor screen. The 5 members hardly looked at each other while singing "Stand by U".

Tohoshinki’s activities in Korea has stopped since Jaejoong (23), Yoochun (23), and Junsu (22) had filed against their Korean management company SM Entertainment regarding their exclusive contract in late July. The five performed together after 3 months’ susupension in “Best Hits Music Festival 2009” at “Kobe World Hall” in November. On this occasion, the 3 members who have filed the suit and Yunho (23) & Changmin (21) traveled on different planes.

Other than the Kouhaku, the five will perform in “Japan Record Award” (TBS) on Dec 30, and also scheduled to have a live performance in the “CDTV SPECIAL! New Year’s Eve Live 2009 → 2010”. Though they have cancelled the fan club meeting scheduled to be held in Janauary, they will release a new single “BREAK OUT!” on January 27. They will also release their first best album on February 17. Their activities afterwards in Japan are not fixed yet.

T/N: There were similar information posted in other sites (from different sources), but since this is from the credible source Mainichi Shimbun (one of the largest daily newspapers in Japan) website, I’ve translated the article again.

T/N2: Everyone, please calm down. I should have added the following statement when I posted the news.
Well, it seems that at last the news of the 5 members in some trouble is leaking out from the Japanese media. Though I personally think that most of them are fake (as with the woman's tabloids the other day), they keep placing such articles, since when you put the name of "Tohoshinki" in the articles, everyone is eager to read them, however fake or true. I am sad to say, but Tohoshinki are money makers in Japan, and since their news are of hot topics, naturally, many media (including credible sources) jump on them.

T/N: Just to clarify, since many people seem to be confused. Tohoshinki did not get nominated for today's awards, but instead they won the Excellent Work Award along with other 10 artists at 51st Japan Record Awards. What they did not win today was the Grand Prix Award, which in the end went to EXILE.
